Hi. I'm Kito. I'm a Shiba Inu, and I am — if I may say so — magnificent. I'm also here to tell you the truth about my breed, because Shibas are wonderful, and we are absolutely not for everyone.
Here are five things nobody tells you before you get one of us.
1. The Shedding Is… A Lifestyle
We have a thick double coat, and when it changes with the seasons, it does not drift out politely. It leaves. Everywhere. On your clothes, your couch, and somehow in rooms we have never entered.
Regular brushing helps, and so does making peace with lint rollers as home décor. If a pristine, fur-free house is non-negotiable for you, a Shiba will test that value daily.
2. We Are Independent — Yes, Stubborn
Shibas were bred to think for ourselves. That means we learn quickly, and then we decide whether your request fits our plans. We are loyal and affectionate, but often on our own terms — more cat software in a dog body, if I'm honest.
We bond deeply. We just don't perform devotion on command.
3. We Are Escape Artists
Give a Shiba a loose gate, a low fence, or an open door and a fascinating squirrel, and you will learn how athletic we are. Secure fencing, careful door habits, a good harness, and never trusting an off-leash moment in an unfenced place are not optional with us.
We don't run away because we don't love you. We run because the world is interesting and we are very, very fast.
4. Train Us With Patience and Rewards
Harsh methods don't make a Shiba obedient. They make a Shiba shut down — or argue. What works is calm consistency, short sessions, and positive reinforcement: reward what you like, redirect what you don't, and repeat it long after you think we "should know by now."
Early socialization matters a lot for us, too. Kind introductions to people, dogs, places, and sounds help a confident Shiba stay confident.
5. We Are Honestly Not a Beginner Dog
I say this with love: if this is your first dog, a Shiba is starting on hard mode. Our independence, strong will, grooming needs, and escape skills ask for an experienced, patient human with a sense of humour.
- Do your breed research before you fall for the face — even a face like mine
- Plan for training and socialization from day one
- Be ready for shedding, supervision, and secure fences
- Choose us for who we are, not who you hope to change us into
Still in love? Good. For the right person, a Shiba is a clever, clean, devoted companion unlike any other dog. Just come in knowing the whole dog — not just the photos.
